HIV treatment has changed dramatically, but stigma hasn’t always kept up. Many people living with HIV say stigma is harder to manage than the virus itself.
How stigma shows up
Rejection on dating apps, fear of disclosure, judgment from family or even health care settings, and internalized shame are common experiences. These can fuel anxiety, depression and isolation.
U=U: Undetectable = Untransmittable
People living with HIV who take treatment and keep an undetectable viral load cannot transmit HIV through sex. Sharing this fact can be empowering, for you and for partners.
Protecting your mental health
Connect with others living with HIV, through local groups or online communities. Decide your own approach to disclosure. Care for sleep, movement and relationships.
Affirming care
Depression and anxiety are common and very treatable. An affirming psychiatric provider can coordinate with your HIV care team and make sure medications work safely together.
