The Bay Area has one of the largest LGBTQ+ communities in the world. Even so, finding a therapist who truly gets your life can take work. For many gay and queer people, a provider with shared lived experience makes therapy feel safer from day one.
Why it can matter
With a gay or LGBTQ+ therapist, you don’t have to explain the basics of your identity, relationships or community. That leaves more time for what you came to work on.
Common reasons people reach out
Anxiety, depression, coming out, dating and relationships, body image, family rejection, religious trauma, substance use and burnout are all common topics. Many people simply want a space where they feel fully seen.
Affirming is more than a label
Look for providers who use your name and pronouns, understand minority stress and don’t treat your identity as the problem. Ask about their experience with LGBTQ+ clients.
Therapy and psychiatry together
Some people benefit from therapy alone. Others do best with therapy plus medication. A psychiatric nurse practitioner who also provides therapy can offer both in one place.
Care at Wellthy Psychiatry
