Grindr, Scruff, Tinder, Hinge, Facebook Dating and even Instagram DMs are part of how many gay men in San Francisco meet people. They can lead to friendships, hookups and real relationships. They can also leave you feeling rejected, invisible or exhausted. If your mood dips after time on the apps, you’re not imagining it.
How apps can affect your mood
Grid-style apps like Grindr and Scruff can make people feel interchangeable, judged on a single photo or a few stats. Swipe apps like Tinder can turn dating into a numbers game. Ghosting, blunt “preferences” and appearance-based filtering can sting, especially when they echo past rejection. And checking for messages can quietly become a habit that pulls you away from sleep, friends and things that actually recharge you.
Healthier ways to use the apps
Set time limits, app-free days or notification limits.
Notice how you feel before and after you open them.
Be clear with yourself about what you’re looking for, whether that’s a hookup, a date or a partner.
Keep in-person connection in your life too, such as LGBTQ+ sports leagues, volunteering, classes or community events around the Bay Area.
Remember that someone else’s preferences say nothing about your worth.
When it’s more than dating fatigue
If loneliness, low mood, anxiety or repeating relationship patterns keep showing up, it may be time to talk with someone. Affirming therapy can help you understand attachment patterns, build confidence and create relationships that feel safe and fulfilling.
