Gay men often face strong messages about how their bodies should look, from social media, dating apps and nightlife. Caring about your health and appearance is normal. But when those thoughts start running your days, they can take a real toll on your mental health.

Signs body image is becoming a problem

  • Constantly comparing your body to others.

  • Avoiding events, photos, the beach or intimacy because of how you feel about your body.

  • Feeling anxious, guilty or low when you can’t follow strict food or exercise routines.

  • Spending a lot of time checking your appearance.

  • Feeling that your worth depends on how you look.

Why it matters

Ongoing body dissatisfaction is linked with depression, anxiety and eating disorders, which affect gay men more often than many people realize and are frequently missed. Eating disorders are serious and treatable, and early support makes a real difference.

What helps

Curating your feeds and apps so they support you rather than drain you. Shifting attention toward what your body lets you do and feel. Talking with an affirming therapist about where these pressures come from. If you’re worried about your eating, the National Alliance for Eating Disorders offers a free helpline and support groups, and a psychiatric provider can help coordinate the right level of care.
