For many gay men, bars, clubs and parties have been some of the first safe places to be themselves. Alcohol and substances can be part of that world. This guide isn’t about judgment. It’s about noticing when use starts to affect your mood, relationships or health, and knowing that support exists.
When use may be affecting your mental health
Using to cope with anxiety, loneliness or shame.
Feeling low, anxious or irritable for days after a weekend.
Needing more to get the same effect, or finding it hard to cut back.
Sex or socializing feeling difficult without substances.
Missing work, sleep or commitments because of use.
Why it’s connected to mental health
Substances can temporarily quiet minority stress, social anxiety or past trauma, which is part of why they can become a go-to coping tool. Over time, they often make depression, anxiety and sleep problems worse. Treating both together tends to work better than treating either alone.
Support without shame
You don’t need to hit a “rock bottom” to ask for help, and your goals are yours, whether that’s cutting back, stopping or using more safely. The SAMHSA National Helpline (1-800-662-4357) offers free, confidential referrals 24/7. If you or a friend are in danger, call 911, and for emotional crisis support call or text 988. An affirming psychiatric provider can help with underlying anxiety, depression or ADHD, and with medications that support recovery when appropriate.
