If you’ve tried several antidepressants without relief, or had side effects that made you stop, you may have heard about GeneSight. It’s a pharmacogenomic test, meaning it looks at genes that affect how your body processes certain medications.
What GeneSight can tell you
The test uses a simple cheek swab and looks at genetic variations that influence how you metabolize many psychiatric medications. Results can flag medications that may need dose adjustments or that may be more likely to cause side effects for you.
What it can’t tell you
Genetic testing doesn’t pick “the right” medication on its own, and it doesn’t predict exactly how you’ll respond. It’s one tool alongside your history, symptoms, other medications and preferences. The best results come from combining testing with a thoughtful conversation with your provider.
Who it may help
People who have tried multiple medications without success.
People who had strong side effects on past medications.
People taking several medications that may interact.
Anyone who wants more information before starting treatment.
Cost and insurance
GeneSight’s cost depends on your insurance, and the company offers a cost estimator and financial assistance. At Wellthy Psychiatry, testing is always optional and discussed together before ordering.
Current self-pay rates, testing costs and policies are listed on our fees and policies page. Self-pay clients receive a Good Faith Estimate when scheduling.
